    There are two main typs of hiatus 
    hernia: Sliding hiatus hernia (more than 80%): The gastroesophageal region 
    slides superior into the chest through the esophageal hiatus when the patient 
    lies down or bends over. Paraesophageal hiatus hernia: The gastroesophageal 
    region remains in its normal position, but parts of the stomach and peritoneum 
    slip through the esophageal hiatus. Some hernias present features of both 
    types and are referred to as mixed hiatus hernias
